More affordable homes for more people in West Sussex

Date: 4 April 2023

We’re delighted to share that work is progressing at our redevelopment site, The Cobblers, in Slinfold, after the demolition of the old building took place in late February.

More affordable homes for more people in West Sussex

The Cobblers, which previously consisted of 17 outdated retirement bedsits with shared bathing facilities, is being replaced with 12 brand new homes for affordable rent. This will include eight one-bedroom flats and four two-bedroom flats, some of which have level access shower rooms, which aligns well with local housing need.

The project has been financially supported by Homes England and Horsham District Council, and working with MH Architects and Westridge Construction, has been designed to meet zero net carbon in operation.

As the development is on the boundary of a conservation area, the proposed materials for the redevelopment have been chosen in discussion with the parish council and the Horsham planning team, and will be sympathetic to the local area.

We’re also pleased to say that thanks to colleagues from Saxon Weald, the Parish council and local volunteers, a part of The Cobbler’s history has been able to live on. Back in 2021, these volunteers dug up some of the plants from the communal garden so they could be saved from the redevelopment and replanted around the village of Slinfold.

After the war, a lot of returning military moved to homes in Slinfold and into The Cobblers as they got older, and planted roses and shrubs with their families around the site. Residents took great pride in caring for these plants and their gardens, so we’re delighted a small piece of history was able to be preserved.
