Fire safety: committed to keeping you safe

Date: 29 January 2026

Accidental fires kill around 200 people every year in the UK. To help protect our customers and communities, we’re launching a year‑long fire‑safety campaign focusing on the most common causes of fires and how to prevent them.

January hot topic: communal areas

Keeping communal areas clear and safe is essential. Items left in corridors, stairwells, and shared spaces can:

  • Block escape routes
  • Increase fire risk
  • Slow down emergency services
  • Endanger lives

You should also help to keep escape routes clear and safe by:

  • Not obstructing communal areas.
  • Not propping open fire doors in shared areas – they are designed to slow the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Not cluttering stairs, corridors or landings with personal belongings or rubbish.
  • Not storing prams, bicycles, mobility scooters or similar items in communal spaces.
  • Reporting anything that shouldn’t be in communal areas to Saxon Weald.
  • Putting all rubbish in the bins provided.

Please remember: if it’s not meant to be there, don’t leave it there.

If there is a fire in your block, call 999 immediately.
