E-safety

E-bikes and e-scooters offer a great way to get around, but if a battery is damaged or begins to fail, it can start a significant fire which could spread quickly.

Please don’t store or charge an e-bike or e-scooter in a communal area, as if a fire starts, it could affect people’s ability to escape.

If you charge or store in a garage or kitchen, the National Fire Chief’s Council recommends heat alarms rather than smoke detectors for these areas. You should also only charge these batteries when you are awake and alert.

Signs that a battery might be a fire hazard include being very hot to the touch, bulging or swelling, a hissing sound, a smell or reduced performance. If you notice any of these signs, immediately turn off the device and unplug it from the power source. If you see smoke, call 999 immediately.

Please remember that lithium batteries should never be placed in the same bins as your regular rubbish or recycling. Check your local authority’s website for the safest way to dispose of them.

Saxon Weald will consider the risks posed by e-bikes and scooters when charged or left in any common areas or mobility scooter charging rooms, and remove them if deemed to be unsafe.
