Apprenticeships play a vital role in helping people begin, grow, and thrive in their careers. They bring new perspectives into our teams and aim to create clear pathways for development. At Saxon Weald, we’re proud to support apprentices at every stage of their journey, from those just starting out to those who have completed their qualifications and want to progress into permanent roles.
Michael, Samuel, Shaun, Jayden and Callum are all at different stages of their development, so we asked them to share their experiences with us. Together, they highlight the support, opportunities, and confidence that apprenticeships can unlock.
Michael, Samuel and Shaun - current apprentices
What’s the most interesting job you’ve completed recently?
Michael - I was recently involved in a job installing four new radiators at a resident’s property. This was one of the bigger jobs I’ve been to. Learning the process and being able to stand back and see what I had accomplished at the end of the day was a great sense of achievement.
How is your apprenticeship supporting your development?
Samuel - My apprenticeship training is helping me get more of an understanding of different trades. I’m learning how to perform them and what the common defects are in the building trade. Before, I only had a small amount of practical experience, so this apprenticeship is helping me get much more hands on and feel more involved.
What advice would you give someone considering a trade apprenticeship?
Shaun - The advice I would give to someone considering a trade apprenticeship is to get as stuck in as you can. Have the confidence to try work that you have never done before and don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they are silly.
Jayden – former apprentice, now Electrician Improver
What were the most valuable skills or experiences you gained during your apprenticeship?
I think working as an apprentice has allowed me to work with most people in HomeFix. During my time here I have also formed some really good friendships with my colleagues. The apprenticeship taught me not only the essential skills I need for my role as an electrician, but also how to put those skills into practice. There are many things that I was unaware of that you are involved in when carrying out electrical work. College alone couldn’t have provided me with this knowledge.
How did the support from Saxon Weald help you succeed?
I have moved into an improver role with Saxon Weald which has allowed me to gain more experience of working on my own, while still having the back up and support of my colleagues. This allowed me to work towards becoming a full electrician. I am most proud of completing my apprenticeship and passing my final AM2 (achievement measurement) assessment. This means that I am now a qualified electrician.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
The advice that I would give to any new apprentice would be to put the work in, actually want to do it, and care about it. The people here will make sure that you succeed.
Callum – former apprentice, now Team Leader - Gas & Plumbing
How did your training, apprenticeship, or our internal programmes support your career development?
I think having a mixture of all three of these is really important. My development has been strongly supported throughout my career but especially at the start when I spent time with senior engineers learning best practice and safety on site. I also learnt how to solve problems. This hands-on learning was backed up by my training at college which also helped me understand the theory behind what I was doing on site. As I then progressed further, completing my gas qualifications was an internal development opportunity, and I was supported all the way through with the training for it. Each job role I have taken on has had specific training developed for it - whether that be shadowing, or spending time in a specific session with others. All of this really helped me build my confidence and do my job as best I can.
What would you want new apprentices to know about long term growth here?
Long term growth here is absolutely possible and I hope that my story motivates others. My progression was down to being willing to learn and having the right attitude. Progression doesn’t always happen overnight but being committed and ensuring you do what you can to keep improving yourself will give you the opportunity to build a successful career.
