Fire in a Steyning home caused by sunlight

Date: 2 July 2025

Last Friday (27 June) the fire service responded to a house fire in one of our properties in Steyning. Their swift response of under three minutes meant the fire was contained very quickly and thankfully, no one was hurt.

The fire started in an adjoining outbuilding and is believed to have been caused by strong sunlight being magnified by a glass window, igniting the contents in the shed.

With the current hot weather and prolonged sunshine, it’s worth looking at your own home and checking that you don’t have any areas where strong sun could cause a fire. Things like mirrors on windowsills can magnify the beams, creating intense heat that could ignite curtains, paper or even furniture.
