Amber heat health alert – staying safe in hot weather

Date: 19 June 2025

An amber heat health alert has been issued across England as the Met Office has forecast temperatures exceeding 30°C over the weekend.

The alert is currently in place from now (Thursday 19 June) until 9am on Monday 23 June.

While many of us enjoy hot weather, prolonged high temperatures can pose significant health risks, especially to young children, elderly people and animals. Here are several steps you can take to protect yourself and others:

  • Wear sun-cream and a hat when outside, and take breaks inside or in the shade
  • Take cool showers or use a cooling spray
  • Drink plenty of water and reduce your caffeine intake
  • Keep your home cool by closing windows and blinds, especially during the hottest parts of the day
  • Limit physical activity to cooler times of the day
  • Check on family and friends who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell. If you are at higher risk, ask them to check on you as well.

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are common during heat waves. It’s important to recognise the symptoms and know what to do if you or someone else experiences them. For more information, please visit: www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/.
